The amusing name with an African reminiscence refers to 1) a famous Cuban drink, 2) a book by Afro-Cuban poet Nicolás Guillén, and 3) a popular salsa song written by Hector Lavoe, a legendary and controversial Porto Rican singer known as the Bad Boy of Salsa. And Songoro Cosongo, the bar, is precisely a blend of good drinks poetry and music. The bar-restaurant has a criollo menu and occupies an old colonial mansion declared cultural site, just half a block from the traditional Puente de los Suspiros. The joyful music is performed on Fridays and Saturdays by a skilled bunch of local musicians. Open Sun and Tue-Thu noon to 9pm; Fri-Sat noon until the last client leaves.
