Considered by far the best sushi bar in Lima, with a life that spans over three decades, impressive Matsuei began as a small eatery in an unattractive part of town. It was co-founded by a certain Nobuyuki Matsuhisa, the same guy that was later to open the Nobu restaurants around the globe, partnering with such celebrities as Robert DeNiro and Giorgio Armani.

Although Matsuhisa's experience in Lima lasted only three years, Peruvian influence was determinant to his style -"if I hadn't made the decision to go [to Lima], I would never have become the man I am today", he once said.

As for Matsuei's food today, it reveals a delicate and astonishing balance between Peruvian and Japanese cuisines, a style that creates some maki rolls that come close to perfection. You will be loudly greeted by the chefs as you enter the teak-floored, multi-atmosphere restaurant. There are many seating areas, both private and open, that equally satisfy families, couples and business dinners. The traditional maki plate is an excellent choice: a prawn, cream cheese, and sesame seeds roll covered with a delicate layer of avocado and served with the sweet house sauce. Another great one is the eel roll.

Matsuei has a second location in Surco (Av. Prolongación Primavera 1494, phone 344-0859).
