Rail Transport from the Sacred Valley to Machu Picchu

Photo © Orient Express

The Sacred Valley Railway offers travellers the possibility of staying longer in Machu Picchu -that is, without having to pass the night there.

The first trains arrive before any other, at 7am, and depart from the Lost City of the Incas after every other train has left, at 6.10pm.

Trains can be taken either in Urubamba or Ollantaytambo, in the heart of the Sacred Valley. As with the Cusco-Machu Picchu route, passengers can choose to travel on the Vistadome or Backpacker trains.

Prices 2006
Vistadome One-Way US $43; Return US $71.50.
Backpacker Shuttle US $53 (return only).

Prices 2007
Vistadome One-Way US $46; Return US $77.
Backpacker Shuttle US $57 (return only).

Consider that Vistadome trains depart daily, all year round, while Backpacker trains are active (also daily) only during high-season (1st April - 31st October). Check Peru Rail's website for an updated timetable.
