The only hotel next to the ruins, the Sanctuary Lodge occupies the same structure built in the 70s by the Peruvian government as a provisional guest house for showing Machu Picchu to excellent visitors and tourists.
Owned by Orient Express (the same as Monasterio Hotel in Cusco), the lodge was refurbished and upgraded to a deluxe category in 2001.
Although the lodge is inevitably seen by many as an intrusion, it's far from being disruptive: actually, you cannot see it from the ruins.
The Sanctuary Lodge has 32 standard double rooms and one suite, all of which have such a high demand year round that it's fundamental to make reservations well in advance. Nine of the rooms have terraces with breathtaking views of the ruins of Machu Picchu and the Sacred Mountain.
The hotel has two restaurants: Tinkuy Restaurant Buffet, offering a daily lunch buffet which is open to the general public; and Tampu Bar Restaurant, a stylish restaurant with a modern Andean-style decoration, and an exclusive local and international cuisine.
The Sanctuary Lodge unique setting has an obvious downturn: it's utterly expensive. The rooms are comfortable and nicely equipped (telephone, Cable TV, Minibar), but the price outmatches any of this -yes, it's the setting you're paying for. However, sunrises and full moon nights over Machu Picchu are undoubtedly worth it.
