How to Travel by Bus in Peru

Inter-city bus travel in Peru ranges widely in quality of experience. Several bus companies operate, often in the same areas. Your ride might be a stiffing experience, with no air conditioning, cramped, stinking and battered seats, and live chickens sharing the luggage areas. Or you might ride in air conditioned comfort with leather recliners, excellent food and drink service, personal multi-channel video screens, clean on-board bathrooms, and a smooth speedy ride.

Richard Gere visits Machu Picchu

The renowned actor Richard Gere arrived to Cusco this morning, and is expected to visit Machu Picchu in the following hours... or days. Mr. Gere enlarges the list of world known celebrities that have recently visited Cusco and the Lost City of the Incas, a list that includes such names as Ron Howard, Woody Harrelson, Susan Sarandon, Cameron Díaz, and Bill Gates.

It's not known for how long will Richard Gere stay in Cusco, or when will he start his ascend to Machu Picchu... or if the 61-year-old actor will take the Inca Trail to Machu Picchu or settle for a more laid-back transportation.

Huancaya Waterfalls

Huancaya’s single biggest attraction is the near endless array of gushing waterfalls that snake through the valley, as the Río Cañete makes its way to the coast. The falls are somewhere between being true waterfalls and river rapids, and they form a continuous trail of foaming water for several kilometers along the valley floor.

The Advantages of Group Travel to Peru

Group travel can be a great way of exploring Peru, in particular when it comes to interest-specific trips involving adventurous travel that will probably take you off the beaten track.

Cost reduction, fun potential among group members, and experience sharing are probably the greatest advantages of group travel. Group travel though isn’t for everyone and if you’re of the lone-traveller type, it probably isn’t for you. Indeed, even the more friendly and outgoing could find that travelling in packs isn’t easy, as people problems and personality conflicts might be frequent (Photo: Christian Haugen).

The best period to travel to Machu Picchu

May to October --the dry season-- is usually seen as the best period to visit Machu Picchu. However, it can get pretty crowded, specially during July and August, somewhat ruining the spiritual dimension of the experience. Besides, nights can get quite cold during these months.

The rainy season, from November to April, brings heavy rains, with most precipitations coming down in January and February. It’s usually clear and dry most mornings with outbursts of heavy rain in the afternoons. During this period, some roads might be closed by landslides or flooding, in particular those leading to villages off the beaten track. And still, some people will take more pleasure in travelling during this period, as there are much less tourists around and a can a more mystic atmosphere can be experienced. Just consider the Inca Trail to Machu Picchu is usually closed during February for maintenance.
